Early Life
While official records may trace his origins elsewhere, I personally came to know of Retsi Pule during my childhood in the then-Port Elizabeth, in our home in New Brighton. Born in the 1970s, I remember his presence vividly — not because I met him directly at that time, but because of the energy, stories, and his name circulating among elders and local musicians. From my memory, Retsi Pule was from Ginsberg, a township known for producing cultural giants and freedom thinkers. That’s where the roots of his spirit and music seem to stretch from.
Our family, the Ntshingas — Norman Ntshinga and Mabel Mgada-Ntshinga — were steeped in township life, and through them, I absorbed the names of the legends. Retsi Pule’s was one of them.

Musical Journey & King Kong Era
Retsi Pule came up during a golden yet turbulent era of South African music — the time of King Kong, the iconic jazz-influenced musical that showcased black excellence under apartheid’s shadow. This era birthed some of the finest voices and instrumentalists South Africa would ever know. In this same cultural stream, Retsi Pule honed his craft, becoming one of the respected jazz singers whose voice stirred political and personal resonance.
A contemporary of greats like Tete Mbambisa, Dudu Pukwana, and other members of the legendary Soul Jazzmen, this includes Winston Mankunku Ngozi. Retsi’s musical reach extended beyond stages — it lived in living rooms, backyards, and jazz dens across the Eastern Cape. His performances were more than just sound; they were rituals, and his dress code reflected that reverence: clean, sharp, classic township elegance. A gentleman jazzman.

Style & Influence
Retsi Pule’s voice is textured like aged wood — warm, worn, rich with story. He blends soulful phrasing with a jazz sensibility that’s rooted in township storytelling. He’s never been one to shout for attention; instead, his calm vocal strength invites you to lean in. Like the jazzmen of his generation, Retsi wore his discipline — from the suit to the song sheet. His dress sense was always immaculate, polished, true to the image of an African performer who respected the stage as sacred ground.
His influence continues to be felt today — in jazz vocal phrasing, in live performances where subtlety wins over volume, and in the way township elegance still shapes the performance aesthetic.

Latest Album: LOOK Into Your Future
Now, at 85 years old, Retsi Pule continues to defy the expected. His latest album, LOOK Into Your Future, is not only a work of art but a statement of endurance. At an age where most have long hung up their instruments, Retsi releases music with clarity and commitment. This album is a reflection of his spirit — one that doesn’t age, only evolves.
To stay young, Retsi surrounds himself with the very thing that gave him life: music. That’s his fountain of youth. The album itself fuses reflections on aging, vision, and legacy — but with grooves that remain fresh, melodic, and deeply rooted in the South African jazz tradition.

Legacy
Retsi Pule’s contribution to South African jazz is profound. He represents endurance, artistic integrity, and the spirit of telling our stories no matter the cost. His role as one of the unsung pioneers of South African vocal jazz cannot be overstated. While many of his peers migrated to Johannesburg or went into exile, Retsi remained deeply tied to the Eastern Cape, allowing him to remain a custodian of local sound.
He is, in many ways, the bridge between the golden generation and the present moment — carrying not only melodies but memories, context, and a code of conduct rooted in discipline and artistic truth.
His influence continues to ripple through local music circles, mentoring minds and moving hearts. His name deserves to be etched not just in records, but in reverence.
