Biography

Tutu Waga Puoane

– Gqeberha Welcomes the Sound of Home

By Lindikaya Ntshinga – Founder Fan of Jazz Comp Sci Guy

Tutu Puoane is coming to Gqeberha, and for many of us, it means more than just another show. She’s one of South Africa’s most respected jazz voices, and her music speaks to identity, love, memory, and healing. For me, as someone who once shared campus grounds with her at the University of Cape Town, it’s personal.

While she was making moves on the Rondebosch side, I was finding my way through tech, code, and culture. Seeing her return as an artist with global recognition feels like a powerful homecoming, especially here in the Eastern Cape.

Tutu’s song “Mpho” is a reminder of how music can carry the weight of love and still offer peace. She sings in multiple languages, blending soul with rooted African storytelling. The song speaks about love, joy, and finding light even in dark times.

When she sings, “Broken Mirrors,” I think of my own childhood in Gqeberha — growing up with fractured reflections of who we were meant to be. Her music gives clarity to those memories. It reminds us that despite the cracks, we are still whole.

She’ll be performing at One Room, one of Gqeberha’s most intimate venues, and it’s not just about the music. It’s about reconnecting, healing, and celebrating South African creativity in its purest form.
